As a member of the Dawnguard, I was expected to kill her on sight, and yet, something held me back (and not just the game preventing me from striking). Then, one day, I was sent to Dimhollow Crypt, and I discovered a young vampire, freshly awoken from her prolonged slumber. There was no more growth, I didn't learn any more about them, and then I would leave for my next adventure. I was somebody's "favorite drinking buddy," and people seemed appreciative, but it seemed to stop there. Through all of this however, I never actually felt that I was developing a relationship with them. I would go through every dialogue option, and, playing as a kindhearted Nord, I would try to help them with whatever stupid quest they asked of me. Personally, I never used followers that much when I started playing Skyrim (mainly because they usually attacked me if I went anywhere near them with a fireball), but I did talk to every NPC I could find.
